About Greenlit

A daily movie game. Five films, one movie, your script.

Why make this?

Every movie starts as a package: a genre, a director, a couple of names for the poster, someone to score it. Then somebody has to write the thing. In Greenlit you flip real films from the Arqo Library and take one credit from each until your package is full. Then you write the logline, and the reader tells you whether it gets made.

We make Arqo, a screenwriting app. Greenlit is the game we play in the writers' room when we should be writing.

How does the scoring work?

Fixed rules, not taste. The same package always gets the same score. The reader looks at whether everyone is making the same movie: is this the director's kind of picture, do the leads fit the genre, does the music suit it, have any of them worked together before, would anyone buy a ticket. Big names help, but four big names in four different movies will not get you greenlit. What you take and when you recast count, and so does your logline: a reader gives it one to five stars, and sharp, original loglines score higher than stock ones. Your title doesn't change the score.

Where do the posters come from?

The real film posters on the cards are the same ones the Arqo Library shows: Wikipedia's own thumbnails, loaded straight from Wikipedia and never copied to our servers. Each card links to the article it came from. The poster for your movie is drawn by the game from your genre and credits.

Is the life of my script real?

No. Every studio, streaming service, list, sale, box office number and award in your results is invented. Nobody real does or says anything in it. The same package always gets the same story, so you can argue about it in the group chat.

Why these films and names, and who decided the ratings?

The films come from the Arqo Library, and each card shows that film's real credits, the way a fantasy draft uses real players. The ratings (draw, acclaim, which genres they are known for) are our own rough judgement, not a verdict on anyone's talent, and the only facts we state are public ones, like two people having made films together. None of them are involved with Greenlit or endorse it. If you are on a card and would rather not be, write to us and we will take you off.

Is AI involved?

Yes, in two places, and here is exactly where. When your package is full, Arqo's AI suggests a title and a logline for it, and later reads your logline and rates it. It sees the five credits you picked and, if you ask for more ideas after writing your own logline, that logline. Nothing else, and you can change both or write your own. Agents also helped draft the film credits and the ratings, and a person on our team reviews them. The scoring, the reader's notes and the life of your script are fixed rules written by us, not a model.

Daily or free play?

The daily is the same six films for everyone, from midnight to midnight UTC. No recasts, one try, and a leaderboard. Free play shuffles the whole deck every time and gives you three recasts. Play it as often as you like.

How do the leaderboards work?

There are two, both reset at midnight UTC. The daily board ranks everyone who played today's six films, one post each. The free play board keeps each player's best game of the day. When you post, you send us your picks, your name and your title, never a score. We replay your game and compute the score ourselves, so nobody can post a number they did not earn. Free play games use a shuffle our server deals, for the same reason.

What do you keep about me?

If you just play, your streak and your scripts live on your device. Two things can be sent to us. The title request (your credits and, if you ask for more ideas, your logline), which we do not store. And, only if you post to a leaderboard, your name, title, score and picks, which are public on that day's board and deleted after 30 days, along with a scrambled form of your IP address we use to stop spam. If you choose to save your streak to an Arqo account, we keep your daily results there, and you can delete them. The Arqo privacy policy covers the rest.

What does Open in Arqo do?

It starts a real script in Arqo with your title, your name and your logline on the title page, and page one blank. The package stays here. Or download the .fountain file and take it anywhere.
